Indonesia Part 2, Timor and Flores

It didn't occur to me that Timor would look like this: Australia. How can a place be hot, humid and parched all at the same time?       The sign says that it is forbidden to put your trash here

High tide       Low tide

This is the famous Gonçal from Balaguer and he claims to like chocolate mixed with his fruit drinks. Jackfruit tree.
Lonely looking island as I flew from Timor to Flores

Kupang, the capital of Timor, is known for its colorful bemos (public buses). Keep in mind that most of these photos are taken of the front of the van, so it isn't so easy for the driver to see out. Not that anyone minds.

The main reason to go to Flores was to see this: Kelimutu. I was lucky to have good weather and it is nice to see, but I was a little disappointed. The iconic photos you see show all three lakes together; they must have been taken from a helicopter. The lakes are often three different colors due to minerals, but two of the three were same-same at this time.
It is an important place for local mythology, but that doesn't mean there is any less garbage tossed around.

Garbage in the river! Garbage on the beach! Garbage in the sea! This girl below left with the white stuff on her face, presumably some sort of beauty cream, she and her friend had just lugged a big tub full of garbage and dumped it in the sea behind her. I asked why she did that and she explained that the tide takes it away. I retorted that the tide brings it back, too, but she just shrugged.
Did you know I can speak Indonesian? Seriously! It is fun and easy. It isn't very necessary either unless you get away from places tourists go. At this moment I could hardly put a sentence together, but when I am in the swing of things there, I can do it. Now all the smart Indonesians study Japanese.

Have to end with a sunset!
